City and In-between: A Sleepless Landscape Where Image and Matter Intersect

A city never exists as a single face. Between the orderly functions of the day and the flamboyant desires of the night, traces of lives we often overlook are accumulated in layers.

In this exhibition, City and In-between, artist Park Sang-hee juxtaposes the nightscapes she has long explored with her recently expanded series of daylight scenes, illuminating the true inner self of the city. Through the intense labor of cutting and layering industrial adhesive vinyl—typically used for commercial signage—the artist transforms the brilliant yet ephemeral illusions of the city into a solid, tactile, and material presence.

The contours and layers carved by her blade serve as a record, testifying to the density of life and the "sleeplessness" of modern society concealed behind the city's flamboyant facade. Within these "fragmented landscapes," where image and matter, reality and sensation collide, viewers will gain a new perspective on the spaces in which we live.

Park, Sanghee

For the past 27 years, Park Sang-hee has explored the dual nature of the city as a vast organism and the existential landscapes of the modern individuals living within it. A graduate of Hongik University (BFA and MFA in Painting), she has held 26 solo exhibitions, establishing a singular and profound painterly language through the use of "industrial adhesive vinyl."

By deconstructing and reassembling vinyl—a byproduct of the urban environment—the artist visualizes the fragmented sensations of a digital society and comforts the weary lives of urban dwellers through artificial light. Her works are held in prestigious collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) Art Bank and Arko Art Center. Having participated in renowned domestic and international residencies, her artistic value has been widely recognized. Today, she continues to document the true inner self of the city, standing at the boundary between image and matter.
