Hyun Jeung 정현
Jeung Hyun is an artist who expresses the rhythms and transformations of life through the lines and grain engraved on woodblocks. Her work bears subtle traces of calligraphy, a practice she has cultivated since childhood. The skills and sensibilities developed through her early training in calligraphy are naturally reflected in her artistic universe, resonating through the movement of lines on the wood.
Her practice extends to an exploration of the relationship between “life and repetition,” evolving into an aesthetics of lines where repetition, rhythm, chance, and intention harmoniously coexist on the woodblock. While rooted in traditional wood engraving techniques, she experiments with multiple impressions from the same block, probing the fundamental sensibilities of painting.
Wood engraving is a printmaking and letterpress technique in which images are carved into a wooden block and then printed. Building on this traditional method, Jung Hyun explores variations in color, transforming inspirations drawn from nature into unique works of art. Her practice can be summarized as “variation rather than replication.” Through the process of layering multiple impressions from a single block, the interplay of wood, paper, and ink—between chance and intention—creates a singular work, each piece wholly unique.
