Born in Seoul in 1968, Song Hong Wha graduated from Seoul National University after graduating from Seoul National University's Western Art Department and went to Germany to study. She graduated from the Stuttgart Institute of Fine Arts and IFKIK Institute in Berlin. She is now making her name known by presenting a number of group exhibitions and solo exhibitions in Europe including Germany, Switzerland and France. This is the first exhibition in Korea in 14 years since her solo exhibition in 2010.
The artist longed for German abstract expressionism and devoted herself to painting for many years in Germany, where she went to study. The artist naturally turned to minimal art when her concerns about materials, colors, and canvases coupled with various attempts to find his identity. In particular, while working on painting based on drawing, he discovers the flexibility of the material called thread in expressing lines. Thus, the drawing is gradually reinterpreted with knitting and transferred to the canvas and space.
Her knitting also includes research and know-how on materials, and skills to create patience and reflection on the body and time. Song sees the exhibition space as a blank page on which she draws. Therefore, she works closely with the singularity and motifs of the place. Through knitting, brush strokes are reproduced, installed, connected, and fixed to the canvas as space work.
At first glance, Song Young Wha's work looks like a brush touch using powerful ink on the canvas, but when you get closer, you will find that the material is wool. She never stop knitting. The thin thread reminds her of lines drawn with pencils. She draws objects with threads and needles instead of pencils. Just as numerous lines express a shape on paper, lines of wool are stacked and stacked to form one shape.
<< I'm working on showing the physical properties of the yarn in a knitted way. How completely it floats like a machine. The focus is not on the '術' (technique), but on example '藝' (art process), such as the stages and processes, the properties of the materials, and the expression techniques. What we do is called art '藝術', (art) so I'm doing art and drinking at the same time.
My work is called spatial drawing. I typically draw lines and erase lines with knitting in space, just like I draw with a pencil on paper. It has thickness and shadow to call it a flat work, and it uses the wall as a support like a flat painting to conclude that it's a piece, so my work halfway between this and that is called spatial drawing. The color I use is the five colors. There's a lot of white black depending on the subject, but brushstroke works with black..>
